Before you start using WhatsApp Business for your company, the first questions are usually the same: Is the app paid, do you pay per message, and how much does the verified badge cost? The answer depends on which WhatsApp Business you use. In this article we cover the app, the verified badge (Meta Verified) and the WhatsApp Business API separately.
Short answer: The WhatsApp Business app is free; you pay nothing to download it or to chat with customers. The verified badge (Meta Verified) is an optional paid subscription; the US App Store lists $14.99 and $49.99 options, and the Turkish App Store lists ₺259.99 and ₺549.00. The WhatsApp Business API is a different product, and since 1 July 2025 it has been charged per message the business sends.
Is the WhatsApp Business app free?
Yes. The WhatsApp Business app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play. Its App Store page also states that the app is free to download and use, with a mix of free and paid features. Sending and receiving messages and making voice and video calls cost nothing extra; they only use your internet connection.
The free features are often enough for a small business:
- Business profile: Address, opening hours, website and description.
- Catalogue: List your products and services with prices and photos.
- Automatic messages: A greeting message and an away message.
- Quick replies and labels: Send common answers with a shortcut and organise chats with labels.
Is the verified badge (Meta Verified) paid?
Yes. For businesses on WhatsApp, the verified badge is part of a paid subscription called Meta Verified. It offers a verified badge, protection against impersonation and enhanced support. The WhatsApp Business App Store page lists Meta Verified as an in-app purchase at $14.99 and $49.99 in the US, and at ₺259.99 and ₺549.00 in Turkey. Prices vary by country, platform and over time; check the current price in the app’s settings before subscribing.
The badge is not required. Customers can message you without any problem whether you have it or not. It can make sense for businesses that face impersonation or want to add trust to their ads.
When does the WhatsApp Business API cost money?
The WhatsApp Business API (officially the WhatsApp Business Platform) is a different product from the app. It runs through software rather than on a phone, and it is used when many agents reply from the same number, for automation and for connecting WhatsApp to other systems. According to Meta’s official pricing page:
- Per-message pricing: Since 1 July 2025, charges are per delivered message sent by the business, not per conversation. Messages customers send to you are free.
- Message type and country: The price depends on the message category (marketing, utility, authentication, service) and the recipient’s country code.
- The 24-hour window: When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens. Outside that window you can only send pre-approved template messages.
- Free parts: The first 1,000 service messages per month are free for each number. Customers who arrive from click-to-WhatsApp ads open a free entry window that can last up to 7 days.
- The 1 October 2026 change: According to Meta’s page, from this date utility messages sent inside the service window, and service messages beyond the first 1,000, are charged.
You usually use the API through a solution partner (BSP) rather than directly from Meta. These companies may charge a monthly platform fee on top of Meta’s message fees, so consider both when you estimate the total cost.

App or API?
- The app is enough if one or a few people handle messages, your daily volume is manageable and you only need greeting and away messages for automation.
- Consider the API if many agents will reply from the same number, you need to send approved template notifications to thousands of customers, or you want to connect WhatsApp to your CRM, booking or e-commerce system.
Using WhatsApp as a team
For many businesses the real problem is not the cost but keeping track: Who replied to which customer, which quote is pending, who was forgotten? Sodo CRM connects your WhatsApp line to a single panel, so your team can reply from the same number in an orderly way, with each customer’s history and tasks on their card. We explain what WhatsApp Business is and how to set it up in our article What is WhatsApp Business, and what to do if your number gets banned in WhatsApp number banned.
