Update, October 2026: We first published this article in March 2025. Since then, the biggest change has happened in Turkey: Google launched AI Mode and AI Overviews in Turkey in February 2026. We have rewritten the article from the ground up to reflect this.

For many years, the only measure of digital visibility was appearing on the first page of Google. Today a large share of users put their question directly to AI instead of a search engine, and get the answer in a single paragraph. If your brand is named in that paragraph, the customer sees you. If it is not, you can stay invisible even if you are on the first page.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) deals with exactly this problem.

Short answer: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) means preparing your content so that AI answers such as Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini cite it as a source. Google launched AI Mode and AI Overviews in Turkey in February 2026. To do it, answer the question clearly in the first sentence, cover the topic as a whole, add original data and sources, keep content up to date and make sure AI crawlers can access your site.

What is GEO?

GEO means preparing content so that it is cited as a source by AI-powered answer engines such as Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Claude.

The goal of classic SEO is to rank high in the list of results. The goal of GEO is to appear inside the answer the AI gives: to have your name mentioned, your site linked as a source, your product recommended.

The two are not alternatives to each other. AI answer engines gather information largely from search indexes and well-ranked pages. That is why GEO does not work without a solid SEO foundation.

What changed in Turkey? AI Mode and AI Overviews

On 18 February 2026, Google began rolling out two features in Turkey. Both run on Gemini 3 models:

  • AI Overviews: A paragraph at the very top of the search results that summarises the answer to the question, with source links below it. Users often read this paragraph and end their search there.
  • AI Mode: A separate, conversational search experience. Users can ask follow-up questions and search by voice or camera. Google explains that it breaks a complex question into subtopics, runs a separate search for each and combines the results (“query fan-out”).

Interest is growing very fast. According to Google Ads Keyword Planner data, searches for “google ai mode” in Turkey increased roughly 14-fold over the past year. Searches for “geo nedir” (Turkish for “what is GEO”) rose about 4-fold, and searches for “ai overview” also rose 4-fold.

In AI Overviews, users see the summary first, then the sites cited as sources.

What does this mean for businesses?

  • Clicks on informational searches are falling. For questions like “What is X?” or “How do I do Y?”, users get the answer in the summary and visit sites less often.
  • Sites cited as sources stand out. The few links under the summary now collect the attention that used to be shared by the ten results on the first page.
  • Decision-stage questions are moving to AI. For questions like “Which dental clinic in Istanbul is good?” or “Which agency for a corporate website?”, AI gives a shortlist. Being on that list is becoming more valuable than advertising.

Differences between GEO and SEO

SEO GEO
Goal: a high position in the results list Goal: being a source inside the answer
Focused on keywords and pages Focused on questions, intent and complete topic coverage
Measure of success: rankings and clicks Measure of success: mentions, citations, visits coming from AI
Titles, meta tags and links matter Clear answers, trustworthiness, freshness and original data matter

How to create GEO-friendly content: a 2026 checklist

1. Answer the question in the first sentence

AI answer engines like to quote paragraphs that give a clear answer to the question. If a heading is a question, the first one or two sentences beneath it should be the direct answer. Explanation and detail come after.

2. Cover the topic as a whole

AI Mode breaks a question into sub-questions. Someone who asks about “website prices” is also shown price ranges, the factors that affect price, hidden costs and things to watch for. A site that answers a topic’s sub-questions on one page, or on pages linked to each other, has a better chance of being cited for more of those sub-questions.

3. Add original data and experience

Content that repeats what everyone else has written is something the AI already knows; it has no reason to cite it. Your own customer data, examples from the field, real price ranges and your own tests are what make you quotable.

4. Show who you are

The author’s name, area of expertise, company information, address and contact details should be clearly visible on the site. Google’s emphasis on trustworthiness applies to AI summaries too.

5. Use tables, lists and FAQs

Comparison tables, step-by-step lists and FAQ sections are structures that AI can easily break down and use.

6. Keep content up to date

AI answers give priority to current information. Instead of deleting old articles, update them and state the date of the update. That is exactly why we updated this article.

7. Leave the technical door open

  • Make sure your robots.txt file does not block Googlebot or AI search bots (such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot).
  • Add your site to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Some AI assistants also rely on Bing’s infrastructure for web search.
  • Use structured data (Organization, LocalBusiness, Article, FAQ).
  • Make pages load fast, and do not hide content behind JavaScript.

8. Get mentioned outside your own site

When AI recommends a brand, it does not look only at that brand’s website. News coverage, industry sites, forums, review platforms and Google Business Profile are also taken into account. For local businesses, Google Business Profile is the shortest route to appearing in AI answers. For details, see our Google Business Profile guide.

Do you need llms.txt?

llms.txt is a proposed file for giving AI tools a summary of your site. Google does not say it uses this file for ranking, and its effect has not yet been proven. Adding one does no harm, but it does not replace the points above.

How to measure GEO results

  • Google Search Console: Google includes clicks and impressions from AI Mode and AI Overviews in the overall web performance report in Search Console. If impressions are rising but clicks are falling on informational searches, the answer may be given in the summary.
  • Google Analytics 4: Track visits from sources such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com in a separate group.
  • Manual testing: Pick 10 to 20 questions your customers would ask and put them to AI Mode, ChatGPT and Gemini every month. Is your brand mentioned? Which competitors are recommended? Which pages are cited as sources? Track this in a spreadsheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. AI answer engines gather information largely from well-ranked pages. GEO is a layer added on top of SEO.

Is Google AI Mode available in Turkish?

Yes. Google began rolling out AI Mode and AI Overviews in Turkey in stages from February 2026. They can be used in the Google app and on the search results page.

Can you pay to appear as a source in AI Overviews?

Organic citations cannot be bought. There may be ad placements around and within AI Overviews, but these are separate and marked as “Sponsored”.

Can a small business benefit from GEO?

Yes, especially local businesses. For questions like “near me”, “best” or “how much does it cost”, AI usually draws on Google Business Profile, reviews and local content.

Conclusion

Search in Turkey now has two layers: on one side the classic list of results, on the other the single-paragraph answer given by AI. In the period ahead, the winners will be the brands that appear in both. The way to get there is to produce content that gives clear answers and is original, current and trustworthy; to keep the technical doors open; and to make sure your name is mentioned outside your own site as well.
