When you search on Google, there is now one more tab at the top of the results: AI Mode. It is a new way of searching that answers your question conversationally instead of with a list of blue links, understands follow-up questions and also works with your voice and camera. AI Mode launched in Turkey in February 2026 and interest is growing fast: searches for “google ai mode” in Turkey rose roughly 14-fold in a year.

In this guide we explain what Google AI Mode is, how to open it on your phone and computer, what it can do, what to do if it won’t open, and how it differs from Gemini.

Short answer: The quickest way to open Google AI Mode is to go to google.com/ai in your browser. On a phone, tap the AI Mode button in the Google app; on a computer, click the AI Mode tab above the search results. It is free. If you don’t see it, update the app, turn off your VPN and try with a personal Gmail account.

What is Google AI Mode?

Google AI Mode is the AI-powered conversational version of Google Search. When you type a question, it does not give you a list of ten links; it gives you an answer that summarizes the topic. Links to the sites the information came from appear within and next to the answer. You can then ask a follow-up question in the same conversation, such as “Which of these is cheaper?”

According to Google, AI Mode breaks a complex question into subtopics, runs a separate search for each one and combines the results into a single answer. In Turkey it runs on Gemini 3 models.

AI Mode and AI Overviews are not the same thing:

AI Overviews AI Mode
Where does it appear? Automatically, at the top of the regular search results In a separate tab, when you choose it
What does it do? Gives a short summary of the question Holds a conversation and gives long, detailed answers
Follow-up questions Limited Yes, the conversation continues
Voice, camera, files No Yes

How to turn on Google AI Mode

You do not need to download a separate app for AI Mode. There are three ways to open it:

On your phone (Android and iPhone)

  1. Open the Google app and keep it up to date.
  2. On the home screen, tap the AI Mode button next to the search bar.
  3. Or run a normal search and choose AI Mode from the tabs at the top of the results page.

On Android, an AI Mode shortcut has also started to appear in the Google search widget.

On your computer

  1. Go to google.com/ai in your browser; AI Mode opens directly.
  2. Or search on google.com and click the AI Mode tab above the results.

Do you need to sign in?

According to Google’s help page, you do not have to sign in to use AI Mode. However, to return to your earlier conversations you need to be signed in with your Google account and have the Search history setting turned on.

In AI Mode you don’t have to type: you can point your camera at an object and ask what it is or what you should do.

What can you do with Google AI Mode?

  • Long, complex questions: Questions with several conditions, such as “Plan a 3-day, budget-friendly trip from Istanbul to Cappadocia for a family of three.” It does in one go what would take several separate searches in regular Search.
  • Follow-up questions: You can build on the first answer with “Which of these is best for children?” It remembers the context of the conversation.
  • Voice search: Tap the microphone icon and say your question. Handy on the go or when your hands are full.
  • Camera and image search: Tap the Lens icon to take a photo or upload an image. You can ask about a plant disease, a recipe for a dish or what a warning light on a machine means. You can add more than one image.
  • PDFs and files: You can upload a PDF or a Drive file and say “Summarize the key clauses of this contract.”
  • Questions about a web page: You can paste a link and ask questions about that page.
  • Comparisons: For comparisons such as “differences between the iPhone 17 and Galaxy S26 cameras”, it usually answers with a table.

Some newer features Google has been testing in the US (such as agents that book restaurant tables, or Deep Search, which researches for hours and prepares a report) are not yet available to everyone in Turkey or are only offered in paid Google AI plans. Because features change quickly, you can check what is enabled on your account from the AI Mode menu.

How do you ask AI Mode a question?

Typing “hello AI Mode” or “switch to AI Mode” into the normal Google search box does not open AI Mode; it just runs a regular search for those words. Switch to AI Mode first using one of the ways above, then type your question. You don’t need a greeting or a special command.

To get better answers:

  • Ask in a full sentence, as you would ask a friend: instead of “boiler”, try “My boiler shows error F28, can I fix it myself?”
  • Add your conditions: budget, city, number of people, dates.
  • Ask follow-up questions: after the first answer you can continue with “Which of these is cheaper?” without explaining everything again.
  • Ask with a photo: tap the Lens icon, take a photo of a product, a plant or an error screen and type your question below it.

Is Google AI Mode free?

Yes. AI Mode is part of Google Search and is free for everyone. Only some advanced features and more powerful models (such as the Pro model) may require a paid Google AI subscription, and some of these are currently offered only in English.

Google AI Mode won’t open or isn’t showing: what to do

If you see the message “AI Mode isn’t available on your device or account right now”, or the tab doesn’t appear at all, check the following:

  1. Update the Google app and your browser. The AI Mode button may not appear in older versions.
  2. Check your language and region. For users in Turkey, Google’s language setting should be Turkish or English and the region should be Turkey. If you use a VPN, turn it off and try again.
  3. Check your account type. On work or school (Google Workspace) accounts, the administrator may have turned the feature off. Children’s accounts managed with Family Link may also be restricted. Try with a personal Gmail account.
  4. Try another browser or an incognito window. Some browser extensions can hide the tab.
  5. Try the direct address: google.com/ai
  6. Wait a little. Google rolls out features gradually; some accounts may get them a few days later.

How to turn off Google AI Mode

Because AI Mode is a separate tab, you don’t need to turn it off: it does not open unless you choose it. Google does not offer a setting that turns off AI Mode or the AI Overviews at the top of the results completely. What you can do:

  • To see only links, choose Web from the tabs at the top of the search results. This view shows no AI summary, just the classic list of links.
  • To clear your history, tap the history icon at the top of AI Mode, then select the conversation you want to delete or choose “Delete all”.
  • To reduce personalization, you can turn off the Search history and personalized suggestions settings in your Google account.

Are Google AI Mode and Gemini the same thing?

No. Both use Google’s Gemini models, but they are designed for different jobs:

  • AI Mode is a search tool. It bases its answers on current web results and shows source links. It is better for questions that need up-to-date information, such as “right now”, “nearest” or “how much does it cost”.
  • Gemini is a general-purpose assistant. It is stronger at tasks such as writing text, drafting emails, generating ideas, writing code and working on long documents.

In short: if you want to learn or find something, use AI Mode; if you want to create something, use Gemini.

What does Google AI Mode mean for businesses?

When users get their answer in AI Mode, they click on fewer sites. And the sites that do get clicks are the ones shown as sources in the answer.
